Mathematics for Teaching Concentration

DESCRIPTION:

The Mathematics for Teaching area of concentration consists of courses that are designed to give students desiring a secondary-school teaching credential a solid foundation in mathematics.  In particular, the courses chosen encompass the mathematical areas tested by the State of Texas on the TExES secondary mathematics examination.  These are the courses currently required for the secondary mathematics teaching field at Texas A&M University.

When the State discontinued the secondary education major in the late 1980's, students were required to obtain a degree in an academic area as part of their mathematics certification; however, the academic area was not required to be mathematics.  Students from dozens of different majors have achieved mathematics certification through Texas A&M University in that time.  However, when the student's main career focus is the teaching of mathematics, the choice of degree program has often been an afterthought for them.  This area of concentration allows students to pursue mathematics certification with the flexibility of tailoring the remainder of their undergraduate program to their needs and desires.  It will serve a different clientele than those desiring to be mathematics majors, who take a more rigorous mathematical program designed to prepare them for mathematics graduate school (although such students will still be able to get certified in mathematics, as they can now).

There is a critical shortage of students certified to teach mathematics in secondary schools in Texas and the nation; this shortage is anticipated to grow worse in the coming years as long-time teachers retire.  This degree option will provide an additional degree avenue to students desiring mathematics teaching careers, on with the flexibility of allowing them to take coursework in other areas of teaching interest simultaneously in the minor areas.
