Frequently Asked Questions About the University Studies Degrees

  • Why do I have to write an essay?
  • Can I design my own degree plan?

  • Any student who wants to complete one of the University Studies degrees must meet course and grade requirements as specified in concentrations that previously have been approved by the Faculty Senate. Each college will provide at least one US concentration, but some colleges may provide more. Each student must also select two minors from the list that is presented after the list of degrees in the Catalog. One of these must be from outside of the college in which the student completes the concentration. There are more than sixty official minors listed in the 2006-2007 catalog.

  • When can I designate University Studies as my major?

  • During the summer of 2007, existing TAMU students who have completed at least 30 TAMU hours and no more than 90 TAMU hours may meet with the Associate Director for University Studies in General Academic Programs and pick up a proposal form. Students who submit proposals must be in good academic standing in courses that count for their concentrations and minors. In the subsequent fall and spring semesters, the deadline for submitting proposals will be the 30th class day of the semester. Since the degree options are in the process of being approved, the process for the approval of proposals will not have a firm deadline this summer.

  • How will the process work?

  • After you submit a proposal, it will be reviewed by either the Associate Director for University Studies or the Associate Dean in General Academic Programs. If it appears to be complete, it will be forwarded to the advisor/administrator in the college that provides the desired concentration. If it is approved, you will be notified by the Office of University Studies, and the new major will be posted on SIMS.

  • Where is the General Academic Programs Office?

  • Take the elevator to the third floor in Hotard Hall. Hotard Hall is the red brick building located between the Northgate Post Office and Neeley Hall.

  • Why do I have to write an essay?

  • The purpose of the essay is for you to present the rationale for the particular combination of minors and concentration you have chosen. The communication that will happen between you and your future major should result in the best outcomes for you in terms of being able to meet your academic and career goals.
