Geosciences
Geography Concentration
DESCRIPTION:
The broad objective of the academic discipline of Geography is to understand and
improve the human environment: Earth. Understanding the Earth's surface
requires a consideration of both natural and social processes, hence Geography
is by nature interdisciplinary. Human-environment interactions are of
particular interest in Geography. The area of concentration in Geography
offers students a broad perspective on the Earth as human habitat, while
permitting them to complete two supporting minors in other disciplines.
The area of concentration is flexible in that numerous courses are included to
permit a student to build a course of study in Geography that is tailored to
his or her interests. Ideally, the minors would be in related fields to
build depth and breadth around themes that the student wishes to emphasize.
The area of concentration in Geography is nested completely within the Geography
major, i.e., all courses in the area of concentration also fulfill some of the
requirements for the major. If so inclined, a student completing the area
of concentration could switch to a major in Geography and apply all the
completed Geography courses to the major. Likewise, the Geography minor
is nested within the area of concentration. A student completing a minor
in Geography could switch to an area of concentration in Geography by applying
all the completed Geography courses and completing two additional courses in
Geography. Further, because the area of concentration does not require
additional courses that are not part of the Geography major, a student majoring
in Geography could switch readily to the University Studies degree with an area
of concentration in Geography.
The University Studies degree with an area of concentration in Geography would
serve both groups of students described above. However, all the majors in
the College of Geosciences are available to students whose GPA is 2.0 or
higher. Therefore, the second group of students -- those seeking a broad
interdisciplinary combination of coursework -- likely would be the primary
group served by this degree.
